Tiger Snake
The Tiger snake or Notechis scutaus is a venomous species that can be up to 1.5 meters in length, though are usually around a meter long. They are locatedmainly in the southern parts of Australia, areas in Tasmania and the coastal islands of Australia. This reptile lives next to water sources as they prefer swampy or marshy ground and get most their water and food from them.
Tiger snakes feed on all types of mammals and reptiles like frogs, lizards, small birds, fish and other small creatures. Even though they usually only eat small animals, Tiger snakes are very defensive and have been known to bite humans, dogs and other creatures to protect their territory.
Keeping Tiger snakes in captivity can be hard, as theyrequire a great deal of food. Enclosures for these snakes have to be big as they are large animals, also as with most snakes, the essential requirements for having Tiger snakes in zoo’s are clean drinking water, a heat gradient and something to hide beneath. A large water source is needed, though the snakes usually only drink from it and do not venture in. Enclosures for Tiger snakesshould represent the habitat they live in, in the wild. That makes them feel more at home in the zoo.
