Rosella

In Australia, there are 39 species of parrots, but one of the most beautiful of these is the Crimson Rosella (Platycercus elegans). The Crimson Rosella is one of the largest Parrots in Australia and has a red body and blue cheeks and tails, which is the same throughout all species of Rosella. The Rosella ranges in size, from 26-37cm, which for a parrot is about medium sized. Their diet consists mainly of seeds and fruit. Though, their natural food consists of seeds of eucalypts, shrubs, grasses and some tree blossoms.

The Crimson Rosella is native to Australia and it’s nearby islands. They are mostly situated in South East Australia, but there is also a large population in Queensland. Throughout the places where the Crimson Rosella live it commonly is associated with tall eucalypts, suburban areas and wet forests.

These birds are commonly found in gardens and in nature reserves but many people also keep the Crimson Rosella in enclosures in their yard or at the zoo. Cages for Rosellas should be large, as they like to fly around and should have a concrete base because they are easily dried as the birds love water and easy to clean. Also when having Rosellas in an enclosure, there should be more then one bird, as they will be happiest with company.
